Course Overview

The General Purpose (GP) Rating course is a 6-month pre-sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, designed to prepare candidates for rewarding careers at sea. This course trains individuals in both deck and engine room tasks, enabling them to serve as versatile crew members onboard merchant ships. The GP Rating course offers a direct path to grow from a trainee seaman to officer ranks, including Chief Engineer or Captain, with experience and further certifications.

Eligibility Criteria

Category 1: 10th Standard Graduates

Academic Requirements:

  • 10th Standard pass with aggregate 40% marks
  • Essential Subjects: Science and Mathematics
  • English Proficiency: Minimum 40% marks in 10th standard
  • Board: Must be from recognized board

Age Criteria:

  • Minimum Age: 17.5 years
  • Maximum Age: 25 years (General Category)
Category 2: ITI Course Graduates

Technical Background:

  • 2-Year ITI Course from Government approved institute
  • Academic Performance: Minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year
  • English Proficiency: Minimum 40% marks in 10th standard
  • Foundation: Must have passed 10th from recognized board

Age Criteria:

  • Minimum Age: 17.5 years
  • Maximum Age: 25 years (General Category)
Category 3: Diploma/Degree Holders

Higher Qualification Benefits:

  • Diploma or Degree from recognized institutions
  • Basic Requirement: 10th standard with 40% aggregate (Science, Mathematics)
  • English Proficiency: Minimum 40% marks in 10th standard
  • Recognition: State/Central Government or AICTE approved

Age Criteria:

  • Minimum Age: 17.5 years
  • Maximum Age: 27 years (Extended for higher qualifications)
  • Special Condition: Shipboard training within one year of course completion
Essential Criteria
  • Passport: Mandatory for maritime career
  • Physical Fitness: Fit for sea service under standard maritime norms
  • Vision: Maximum (+/-) 2.5 with no color blindness
  • Age Range: 17.5 to 25/27 years depending on category
Age Relaxations
  • SC/ST Candidates: +5 years
  • OBC Candidates: +3 years
  • Women Candidates: Additional +2 years for each category

Course Structure & Training

At CMC, cadets undergo hands-on training using a state-of-the-art Ship-in-Campus infrastructure. This includes:

  • Operation and troubleshooting of main and auxiliary marine engines
  • Engineering workshop practice for fabrication and repair
  • Deck operations, seamanship, and safety drills
  • Soft skill training, discipline, physical fitness, and teamwork

Career Path

After successful completion, candidates are issued: INDoS Number, CDC, Course Completion Certificate
